What is The Need of Spirituality?

Someone asked me, “Why is it needed to think of all these things? Why should we bother about spirituality, soul, god and such stuff?” Today, let us try to understand the answer of this question. As I believe, many of you must have this question in your minds.

There are reasons that force us to think, explore, investigate and acquire knowledge. One is our capable brain. It will not settle down with anything less than what it already knows it is capable of. Another is our ignorance.

When I say we are ignorant, I see people with raised brows. But, it is the reality. Whatever we think we know, most of it has come from some reference and some of the things are so widely accepted that they do not seem questionable at all. But, the simple matter of fact is that we hardly ever try to find out something with our own direct experience. I cannot think of a question simpler at same time profound than “Who am I?”.

So, what I am trying to say is, it is not required at all to think of things that you are not concerned with but you cannot really live without identifying your own self at least. All the great sages began with simple questions that led them ultimately to things that appear now metaphysical to us and unimportant. This is exactly like an arithmetic expression from 12th standard will seem absurd, un-relatable and highly useless to a student of 3rd standard who just started adding numbers.

Do not think of high philosophy now. Just focus on one question. This blog it also trying not to involve readers directly into deeper discussions of secrets of existence but to create awareness of the unknown first. The point here is just to realize that there is a lot that we need to know to understand what we are looking for.

Unless we know that our knowledge is limited and limiting, we cannot make fair attempts to discover new things. This is the basic difference between a common person and a scientist or a sage. We think we know everything. They know that they know nothing. So, let us just drop this myth that we know everything and develop childlike curiosity. With our improved power of discrimination, let us try to understand things at the core again.

If you just start to practice this attitude, you will soon realize that the French Philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin was very true when he said,

We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.
